Boaters make a plan

For our annual halloween raftup it was warm and sunny but we only had one boat interested in coming to la Playa Bay, so instead, we had a barbeque at PJ’s Point at Southwestern Yacht Club. Even that had did not go as planned as a wedding party was using the point for a photo opp. So being adaptable boaters, we dragged the picnic table into the parking lot and using our portable grill by the dumpster. This is now our annual ‘dumpster’ party! Great burgers and dogs from the grill, german beer, and festive halloween desserts. It was great fun and I can’t wait until our next get together.

America Sailboat
    America Sailboat

    AMERICA is the world’s most famous racing yacht. Winning the ‘Royal Yacht Squadrons’ 100 Guinea Cup in 1852. This low black schooner from New York Yacht Club won the race around the Isle of Wight. They donated the trophy to the club, starting the America’s Cup Race.

    The original America boat was destroyed during WW2 but this replica rebuilt in 1955 is now berthed in America Cup Harbor of Shelter Island in Point Loma San Diego doing daily pleasure cruises and charters. With a length of 139 feet and  mast height of 105 feet she can carry 77 passengers and crew.

    Sail Fleet Race – Oct 19, 2019

    Saturday, October 19, 2019 was an excellent day for sailing. The first part of the race at
    the noon horn revealed NO wind. It took about 15 minutes for all boats to finally past
    the starting line. About 30 minutes after the start the wind started to fill in. The boats
    were all chasing “dark water”. In 45 minutes into the race the wind was up to our regular
    8-12 knots. From the middle of the race to the end the wind was a constant 12-14 knots
    with gusts to 15 knots. The wind was from the west with the skies being crystal clear
    blue. There were one other group racing in the south bay. The group appeared to be from
    the San Diego Yacht Club and it looked very official. There were about an equal number
    of racing sailboats as there were committee boats. Is this the way real official
    sailboat racing is? Our group and the San Diego Yacht Club group pretty much stayed
    out of each others way.
    Our group had 9 boats at the starting line for our normal pursuit race. The various
    groups started at noon: 12:03, 12:06 and 12:08. Boats present were Pie in the Sky,
    Madam Wu, and Bibbity Bobbity Boat in the first group. Phyrxus was across with the
    second group at 12:03. The third, Astra, Consigliare, Bon Temps and Ran crossed at
    12:06. And finally Marilee, the largest boat in the fleet was off at 12:08. After the slow
    start the boats began to spread out.
    Across the finish line first goes to Marilee the corrected
    time of: 13:52:8. They were followed by Consigliare
    13:54:58, Astra 14:00:01, Ran 14:02:07, Phryxus
    14:03:55, Bon Temps 14:07:36, BBBoat 14:18:23, Pie in
    the Sky 14:28:30, and Madam Wu 15:20:00.

    Sail Fleet Race – Aug 17, 2019

    Saturday August 17, 2019 was a fine day for sailing. Winds were light from the west at 8-10-12 knots. These light winds favored the lighter boats. Nine boats were circling the starting line for the noon start of our monthly pursuit race. The noon start included Pie in the Sky and Bibbity Bobbity Boat. The 12:03 starters were Atsa II and Imagine. The final group start at 12:06 had five boats: Astra, Consigliare, Bon Temps, Marilee and Rai. Rai is a fairly new boat. If anyone knows the owners, type and size of the boat and how to contact them please let me know.

    The starting line was crowded for the third start and Marilee almost collided with Astra so we are thinking about adding another starting group. Going from three starting groups to four. With the light winds the smaller boats stayed ahead of everyone until about the third leg and then the larger boats began to compete for leader. Finish times were as follows;

    Sail Fleet Race – June 15, 2019

    Saturday June 15, 2019 was an exceptional day for a sail. Wind was predicted to be a
    gentle breeze (7-10 knots), but was actually a moderate breeze (11-16 knots). According to the Beaufort Scale there are “fairly frequent white foam crests”. Wind was coming from the WNW, or about 290 degrees. None of the boats had reefs in their sails. The tide was moving out of the bay and Low Tide was approximately 1400. Five boats were circling the starting line for the noon horn. As usual this was a pursuit race with group C starting at 1200, group B at 1203 followed by group C at 1206. Everyone crossed the starting line close to their starting horn. Pie in the Sky ended being a little late to the line. At the first mark all the boats were piled up rounding Buoy C. By the time the boats arrived at Buoy A they were strung out with Phyrxus in the lead. Phryxus stayed in the lead for most of the race, however on the last leg fell behind to Astra and Bon Temps. The finish times were as follows:

    Astra; 13:38:00,

    Bon Temps 13:39:03,

    Phryxus 13:41:37,

    Bibbity Bobbity Boat; 13:47:37

    Pie in the Sky; 14:15:00.

    There was a report from an “unreliable unnamed source” that Marilee, Consigliere, ATSA II, Mal Pais and others were anxious regarding the difficult
    course and did not want to sail. The race committee will take this into consideration for
    next month’s race. Take a look at raceQs for the race from buoy C to buoy A. Lots of competition!

    Sail Fleet Race – May 18, 2019

    Saturday May 18, 2019 was a fine day for sailing. There were 9, or 10 boats circling the
    starting line for the 12:00 start. I am not sure if I have the times, or names for all the
    boats. If you do not see your name and time contact me and we will
    correct the results. As usual we had a pursuit race with starting horns at 12:00, 12:03 and 12:06. With the first horn there were only light winds. By about 15 minutes into the race the wind was blowing a constant 14 knots. All the boats were flying along with NO reefs in any sails with everyone doing hull speed. The boats at the starting line are as follows:

    Astra, Consigliare, Marilee, BonTemps, Atsa II, Bibbity Bobbity Boat, Mal Pais, Pie in the Sky and Miller Time III.

    Welcome back out on the race course Mal Pais. We have all missed you over the past
    few months. Pie in the Sky was looking really good at the starting but did not finish the
    race. The race committee understands there is some contention at various marks along the race course. This is the “Family Sailing Series”. It is intended for beginning sailors. If you are yelling and shouting at other boats not following the sailing rules you belong in another race. Try the Rum Series, or the Beer Can Series in the North San Diego Bay.
