SDSPS Sail Fleet/South Bay Family Sailing

Saturday, April 20, 2019 was a prodigious day for a sail. It was predicted by the weather person to be about 70 degrees with partially cloudy skies. Winds were to be 12-16 knots from the NW. These predictions were close to being correct. Again, we were the only race in the San Diego South Bay. CLEAR SAILING! There were seven boats circling the starting line for the noon start. The first group started at noon, the second at 1203 and the third group at 1206. It was a long beat up to A and Pie in the Sky won the honors around the first mark followed closely by Astra, Consigliare, and Phyrxus. Heading to the second mark these three boats pulled ahead of Pie in the Sky and that was pretty much the race. A couple unique accounts from this race were the fact that BBBoat raced with only the main sail. Were they giving the rest of the fleet a chance since they have won so many trophies over the years? Also, Marilee forgot, or did not raise their sails even after the starting horn. Were they giving all the other boats a head start, or were they just increasing their handicap??? Next time you see the crew of Marilee, or BBBoat ask them what was going on. Across the finish line with their times are;

Putting all this into the Handicap System the final results were First: Imagine,
Second: Astra, Third: Phryxus, Forth: Consigliare, Fifth: BBBoat, Sixth: Pie in the Sky, Seventh: Bon Temps Eighth: Marilee.

Saturday, February 16, 2019 was an excellent day for sailing. All week long it had been
raining and everyone was debating whether it would be dry on Saturday. The weather
person predicted about a 20% chance of rain as the cold front moved off to the east.
Winds were predicted to be 15-18 knots from the NW. As the sun came up on Saturday
there were blue skies with puffy white clouds flying to Arizona. Sailing out to the starting line for the noon start there was chatter on the radio about how much sail should we set, no reef, one reef, or???? Circling the start it was about evenly matched with half the boats with one reef in the main sail and no reefs. There ended up being 10 boats at the starting line, Bon Temps, Makai, Madam Wu, ATSA II, Consigliare, Astra, Pie in the Sky, Marilee, Phyrxus, and a new boat “Ran”. Ran is a Beneteau 423 sailed by Bram Arnold out of the Fiddler’s Cove.

The first group crossed the starting line at noon, followed by the second at 12:03 and the third at 12:06. Most all the boats crossed the starting line coming from the north and were on the starboard tack. Rounding the first mark showed a crowded field with boats from all groups trying to get an advantage. By the second mark the boats had stretched out so there was freedom to maneuver. The wind predictions were fairly accurate with winds ranging from 12-15 knots with gust up to 20 knots coming primarily from the WNW.

Across the finish line honors went to; Ran with corrected finish time of
13:26:10 followed by Astra 13:29:35, Marilee 13:30:38, Consigliare
13:31;41, Bon Temps 13:41:07, ATSA II 13:44:07, Pie in the Sky
13:55:51, Phryxus 13:58:30, Makai 14:01:15, Madam Wu 14:27:21.

Congratulations to all sailors! LOTS of WIND. Phryxus gave
everyone a chance and sailed with just the mainsail and NO jib. Bon Temps ended up
with a broken rope clutch.

Saturday, January 19, 2019 was the best day for sailing we have seen for many months.
It rained on the Wednesday before the race. Social media was abuzz with discussions
about which boats were going to be out on the water for the Saturday race. If you missed out “shame on you”, you missed a fantastic day. The skies were clear blue, no clouds on the horizon and the wind was coming up at 1130 to 4 and 5 knots.
Eleven boats were circling the starting line for the noon horn. The race was going to be
a “Pursuit Race” since there are so many boats sailing. On the water were familiar boats Fast Sunday, Simplicity, Pie in the Sky, Phryxus, Marilee, Gunslinger,
Bon Temps, Astra, and ATSA II. Two new boats were in the mix: Miller
Time III, and Imagine.

Group C was first to cross the start line at noon followed by Group B at 1203 and Group C at 1206. Fast Sunday was first to cross the starting line while last across the line was Astra. All boats were racing by 1207. Winds were typical from the NW at about 10 knots. The first mark was crowded with boats of all sizes however, by the second mark the group was spreading out with Marilee leading followed closely by Phryxus, and Astra.Across the finish first with uncorrected times were Marilee 13:16:46, followed
by Astra 13:18:28, Phryxus 13:20:45 , Gunslinger 13:24:06, Bon Temps 13:24:25, ATSA II 13:26:30, Simplicity 13:33:20, Miller Time III 13:38:12, Pie in the Sky 13:38:30, and Fast Sunday13:43:49 . We could not find the time for Imagine. Does anyone know Imagine???? If so please let us know: captain’s name, type and length of boat, email address.
