Sail Fleet Race – Feb 20, 2020

February 2020 Race ResultsTo All South Bay Racing Participants:There was a great time to be had  last Saturday in the South Bay Family Sailing Series, with nine boat participating.  We enjoyed warm weather, welcome sunshine and fairly consistent winds in the 8 to 12 knot range.  Sharing the fun in the sun pursuit race were: Miller Time III, Fast Sunday, Madam Wu, Bass Boat, Atsa II, Phryxus, Astra (BSA), Ran and Marilee…Tide was coming in at the start of the race, and yet most competitors chose to head into it towards the  San Diego Bay Bridge before tacking to a port rounding of the first mark — Alpha.  Three captains chose to head west toward Bravo before tacking and as luck would have it,  we enjoyed a building wind to carry them to the first mark. ( A pursuit race is always fun for the crew of the Marilee as we can see and photograph many of the competitors.)

Sail Fleet Race – Nov 16 2019

America’s Boating Club-Sail Fleet/South Bay Family
Sailing Series/Ventura Sailing Club-November 16, 2019
Saturday, (7.6 nm.)
Saturday, November 16, 2019 was a fantastic day for sailing. It was just the typical
San Diego day. The wind was a constant 10-13 mph out of the northwest. The San
Diego South Bay was flat and there were NO other racers in the area. Sky was blue
with no clouds and the temperature was in the 70’s and 80’s. Not bad for a couple of
weeks before Thanksgiving.
There were only 5 boats at the starting line for the noon horn. Maybe the sparse
numbers was do to the “Baja Ha Ha” Race to Cabo San Lucas that started on
Monday, November 4. A number of our racers participated in this event, Steve
Brodbeck on Consigliare and Jay who sails on Sea Story. There may have been
other local sailors participating as well. The race committee had a discussion
whether their race would substitute for our race. Discussion is on going. ( Ha, Ha)
Our pursuit race started with Fast Sunday and The Bass Boat starting in the first
group. The Bass Boat is an Ensign 23 and is sailed well by Doug Bass, commander of
America’s Boating Club, San Diego. WELCOME Doug Bass and “The Bass Boat”
The next groups followed with Pyrxus (group 2), Bon Temps (group 3) and finally
Marilee (group 4).
Phyrxus slowly moved through the eight legs of the race course to the front and held
on to win first over the finish line honors. Corrected time honors go to Marilee with
13:44:30, followed by Phyrxus 13:46:15, Bon Temps 13:51:01, The Bass Boat
14:02:47 and Fast Sunday 14:38:10.
Congratulations all racers.
Putting all the finish times into the Collins Handicap System result in the following:

We hope to see you all out on the water. Bring a friend.

Boaters make a plan

For our annual halloween raftup it was warm and sunny but we only had one boat interested in coming to la Playa Bay, so instead, we had a barbeque at PJ’s Point at Southwestern Yacht Club. Even that had did not go as planned as a wedding party was using the point for a photo opp. So being adaptable boaters, we dragged the picnic table into the parking lot and using our portable grill by the dumpster. This is now our annual ‘dumpster’ party! Great burgers and dogs from the grill, german beer, and festive halloween desserts. It was great fun and I can’t wait until our next get together.

America

AMERICA is the world’s most famous racing yacht. Winning the ‘Royal Yacht Squadrons’ 100 Guinea Cup in 1852. This low black schooner from New York Yacht Club won the race around the Isle of Wight. They donated the trophy to the club, starting the America’s Cup Race.

The original America boat was destroyed during WW2 but this replica rebuilt in 1955 is now berthed in America Cup Harbor of Shelter Island in Point Loma San Diego doing daily pleasure cruises and charters. With a length of 139 feet and  mast height of 105 feet she can carry 77 passengers and crew.
