Offshore Navigation (previously offered as Junior Navigation) is the first in a two-part program of study in offshore navigation, followed by the Celestial Navigation course (currently offered as Navigation.). It is designed as a practical “how to” course. The course includes use of the Nautical Almanac, taking sextant sights of the sun, reducing sights to establish lines of position, and electronic and computerized offshore navigation.

This course is taught Wednesday’s for eight weeks and use provided sextants to take and reduce sights of the sun. The requisite for this course is Advanced Marine Navigation.

Advanced Marine Navigation (previously offered as Advanced Piloting) is the second in the sequence of USPS courses on navigation. It continues to build coastal and inland navigation skill, allowing the student to take on more challenging conditions – unfamiliar waters, limited visibility, and extended cruises. GPS is embraced as a primary navigation tool while adding radar, chart plotters, and other electronic navigation tools.

This course is taught Monday’s for eight weeks and includes a final exam as an open-book take home test. The prerequisite for this course is Marine Navigation.

No matter how much experience you have with boating, it is important to have the knowledge needed to keep your passengers, yourself and your boat safe.

Get your state boating card and learn the skills you need to be safe while boating.

This course is taught Tuesday’s for eight weeks and includes safe boating practices and basic navigation. Passing the test will qualify you for the California Boaters Card (required for all 50 years old and younger).
