I have been racing with the Squadron fleet for several years now and always
make a point of making this a high priority on my calendar. This month both
Casamar and Jandon reported that they would not be available and Don
Litzenberg asked if I would take care of the start as well as the activities
at the yacht club after the race, and I was happy to do so. I knew I would
be available on the 6th, but not the 13th so we adjusted the race date away
from the 2nd Saturday to the 1st. As things progressed, things only got
more complicated. As it turns out, this was the most unusual race I have
ever participated in. As the start time approached, His Knot Hers was
getting ready at the buoy 17 starting line. We looked around and did not
see anyone in our fleet. Marilee had reported that they would be out but we
never saw them. We sounded the warning, preparation and starting horns and
still saw nobody. There was another fleet starting a race near us and they
all looked at us like "Who is this idiot starting a race with no
competitors?" As we started to the South, the fleets (theirs and us)
separated, and there was still nobody else from SDSPS. It was a beautiful
day with a nice breeze, so we decided to run the course and enjoy the day on
the water. We rounded buoys 15, 14, 17, 19 and 21 having a leisurely sail.
Then came the surprise. There was Dan Nephew on Bare Necessities continuing
on the short boat course which had started in the opposite direction of us.
Now we had to suddenly get serious, there was competition. After we rounded
buoy 23 we were struck with equipment failure, a minor break at one end of
the boom vang bracket. As the short and long courses diverged and crossed
we were able to pass Dan again, and finally lost him as we came back up the
bay. The wind continued to build with lots of white caps at the corner by
the aircraft carriers so we had to work to keep the boat under control.
Later, at the yacht club, we heard reports of steady gusts exceeding 28
knots. I'm sure it was stronger where we were. All in all, it was a great
day on the water, but then any day of sailing is better than a day sitting
at home.
After a day like this, I must challenge everyone in the Squadron, other
local Squadrons and their friends to come out and join our group. We
generally race on the 2nd Saturday of each month except for January and
December. As you can see reading our monthly reports, this is friendly, low
key racing. It provides an opportunity for anyone with a sail boat to get
it out on the water with a designated course to sail. It provides an
opportunity to hone your skills as a sailor and socialize with a group of
friends. And since we are a performance handicap fleet, you are really
racing against your own previous performance. If you gradually improve your
own skills, you will win a competition against the most experienced sailors.
So how did we both finish? What will happen after handicaps? I'll leave
that all up to Don to report.
P/LtC John Isaksen, P
Don reporting here:
In spite of John's surprise competition, heavy winds and equipment damage he
still took first in the race; and, with two races to go for the year, is
also first in cumulative points. Hope to see you all on the bay again for
the October race. The race results are attached and may also be viewed
below.
