All,
The San Diego Sail and Power Squadron Sail Fleet Race for November was the
final race of the year. It was a great day to be on the bay! We couldn’t
have asked for better weather! There were three boats in the fleet. Mike
Collins and crew aboard Marilee, Ted Bowler and crew aboard Fiddler’s Green
and Jandon and able crew. The course was the usual, “out to Buoy Eight and
back”. At the start the wind was blowing at a steady 12 knots. The more
wind the better for Marilee. We started at G17, sailing close-hauled to
G11, by Ballast Point and then on to R8, near Zuniga Bell. Fiddler’s Green
tacked over to G9 from G11 for the short course. We proceeded on to R12,
G15, around G17 and on to G1 at the entrance to the America’s Cup basin.
>From the start Marilee dogged Jandon, nearly catching us as we rounded G17
on our way down the bay to G1 and on to FM19. I suspect Mike was
considering his handicap and decided to fall back and not push his crew too
hard. Well, the wind speed did drop considerably as we approached G17.
The wind continued to drop to four or so knots the farther into the bay we
sailed. As we neared FM19 the wind picked up again; we took advantage of
the freshening wind, the ebbing tide and charged back to G17, finishing some
ten minutes ahead of Marilee.
So, who won the last race of the year? Well, Jandon’s ten minute lead
wasn’t enough and Marilee won again on handicap. Well done Mike! Ted
trailed gamely, finishing third. Ted, you need Dave Baer to sail with you
and help you make that boat go faster. Jandon, of course, was next to last.
Better luck next year! I’m definitely going to fix our handicapping system.
Look out! Hope to see you all on the bay in ’08!
